Five Questions With Kelly Bray

Get to know rising country music star Kelly Bray in this special feature. We asked Kelly five quick questions about her songwriting journey, her inspirations, and what fans can expect next. Dive in and discover the heart and soul behind one of Australia’s most exciting new voices in country music.

Tell us a little about where you’re from and how your journey into country music began

I was born in Burnie, Tasmania and raised in a little town called Penguin. I grew up on 3 ½ acres riding motorbikes and watching any country music show that would be on tv. We spent every school holidays and long weekends at our family shack at Binalong Bay, where I grew up listening to old traditional country music and knew from a very young age I wanted to become a singer. My Family has had a huge impact on influencing me as well as family members played guitar and sing.

Who are some of the artists or experiences that have inspired your sound and songwriting?

As a young girl I have fond memories of spending time with my Nan, her favourite singer was Daniel O’Donnell, she had every video ever made so I would spend hours in front of her tv watching the videos, he is still one of my favourite artists today. Another is Adam Harvey, as I love his sound and his down to earth personality, which makes him such a great entertainer. I love the traditional sound he has and am aiming for that in my music. As for my songwriting, my songs have come from personal experiences, (first love, break ups, other women)

What’s one song you’ve written that feels especially close to your heart and why?

“Too Young To Love”

This is a song I hope to record this year, this is the most personal song I’ve written so far. It is written from my experience with my ‘first love’ I was 15 and the guy was a bit older, as a young girl he was the one and treated me like an angel then completely broke my heart when he ended things due to the age gap he knew I was ‘too young to love’

How would you describe your style of country music to someone who’s hearing you for the first time?

I would say a traditional sound but a unique sound, something different to what others are doing today.

What are you most excited for fans to experience as you share your music and story with the world?

I am excited for them to join me on my journey as I grow as an artist.
